Tax Planning & Advice

Capital Gains Tax Planning

There are a number of reliefs available to reduce a charge to capital gains tax on a sale of an asset. These may include:

  • Ensuring that Entrepreneurs’ Relief is available when selling a business asset. This may involve a review of the client’s business interests many months, if not years, before a prospective sale in order to avoid any nasty surprises
  • With more people owning second properties, either investment or holiday homes, Principal Private Residence (PPR) relief is often overlooked as a valuable relief
  • Claiming capital losses at the earliest opportunity
  • Deferring a chargeable gain by investing in a company qualifying under the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS)Man holding piggy bank

Remuneration Planning

One of the decisions facing the owner/managers of a company is how to extract profits? The options include salary, bonus, dividends, benefits and pension contributions. All of these can have different tax implications not only for the company but also for the director. At Sayers Butterworth LLP, we can provide a comparison of the different scenarios, with the result that the overall tax payable need never be greater than it has to be.
